Generation Z is redefining what it means to be an entrepreneur in the modern era. Growing up in a hyperconnected and ever-evolving digital landscape, they seamlessly blend creativity, innovation, and ambition to forge their own paths.

Far from being passive consumers, they are active contributors, creators, and change-makers who often dive into entrepreneurial ventures while still pursuing their education. Their unique approach to problem-solving and their fearless drive to experiment set them apart as the leaders of tomorrow.

A Generation Redefining Creativity

Generation Z’s entrepreneurial spirit is characterized by a blend of autonomy, creativity, and agility. These young innovators thrive on pushing boundaries and exploring uncharted paths. According to an Opinion Way study, nearly half of 18- to 24-year-olds express a desire to start their own business. This ambition is paired with a dynamic approach to work, where traditional "jobs" are replaced by short-term projects focused on impactful missions.

Key Skills of Generation Z

Generation Z stands out for their mastery of digital tools and their ability to adapt to an ever-changing world. Among their key strengths are:

  • Initiative and Autonomy: They are unafraid to try, fail, and try again. Experimentation is at the heart of their approach, making them particularly innovative. However, they value clear frameworks and tailored coaching to help maximise their potential.

  • Collaborative Culture: Creating alone? Not for them. They prefer surrounding themselves with partners and working collaboratively. This ability to form strong alliances enhances their ideas and enriches their projects with diverse perspectives.

  • Curiosity and Openness: Their "mad skills"—unique and unconventional talents—enrich their projects. Whether gained through volunteering, travel, or personal passions, their curiosity is a constant source of innovation.

What Sets Generation Z Apart

Unlike previous generations, for whom entrepreneurship was often synonymous with launching a start-up, Generation Z takes a hybrid approach. They juggle salaried roles and entrepreneurship (a practice known as "slashing") and rewrite the rules within companies by becoming intrapreneurs. Their projects are fuelled by their ability to leverage digital platforms, create content, and engage with their communities.

How Businesses Can Benefit from Generation Z's Talent

To attract and retain these innovative talents, companies must adapt their strategies:
Encourage Intrapreneurship: Create innovation labs and involve young employees in co-creation projects. Provide tools for them to express themselves, pitch ideas, and experiment within the company. This not only strengthens their engagement but also provides creative solutions to organisational challenges.

  • Value Their Creativity: Offer innovative recruitment formats, such as video introductions or collaborative challenges. This shows that your company is modern while appealing to young people who seek interactive and stimulating processes. For instance, recruitment campaigns based on competitions can uncover hidden talents.

  • Foster Hybrid Models: Allow them to balance different activities, such as working on their start-up while holding a salaried position. Flexible models enable them to combine their passions with their professional responsibilities, increasing their motivation and creativity.

  • Focus on Values: Authenticity, diversity, and sustainability resonate deeply with this generation. Aligning your practices with these values will attract young talent. For example, involve them in CSR initiatives where they can make a tangible impact.

Generation Z’s entrepreneurial spirit represents an unprecedented opportunity for businesses that know how to nurture it. By leveraging their creativity, collaborative mindset, and thirst for innovation, organisations can not only attract these young talents but also benefit from their fresh perspective on the world of work.

As Robert Green aptly said, "Creativity lies at the intersection of discipline and childlike spirit."
